How it came together
This trip started with an application. We opened an American Airlines card specifically to fund business class to Tokyo, with the seat already picked out before the account existed. Most people run that order backwards, take the bonus because the offer looked good, and then spend the next two years trying to find something worth doing with the balance.
The seat cost 50,000 AA miles and $150–200 in taxes against a roughly $3,000 paid fare. Nine days later, that same cabin is what made the red-eye home feel like a rest day.
On the ground the entire hotel run went through one partner, Chase Ultimate Rewards into Hyatt: Ginza at 12,000 points a night for the city days, Hakone at 12,000 for three nights of onsen, and the Park Hyatt Kyoto at 5,000 points on an off-peak night, a rate that reads like a typing error next to the cash price. Over $1,000 of hotel across three fairly different versions of Japan, all out of one currency, with nothing stranded in a program we'd never open again.
The key move
Opening the AA card for the sign-up bonus with the business-class seat already picked out, then running an entire multi-city hotel itinerary through a single transfer partner rather than chasing whichever chain happened to be cheapest in each city.
What we'd repeat
- Earn toward a named redemption. The plan should exist before the application does.
- Hyatt's off-peak award nights are the strongest fixed-value target in points, and Japan is where that gap is widest.
- Take the premium cabin on the leg you'll actually feel, which for most people is the flight home.

Land, adjust, eat. The Hyatt in Ginza did the heavy lifting on location while costing nothing but points.
Days 4–6
Hakone
Three nights in the mountains
Onsen, ryokan pace, and a full stop in the middle of the trip. 12,000 points a night, three nights, no cash.
Days 7–8
Kyoto
Park Hyatt for 5,000 points
An off-peak night at a hotel whose cash rate is in the high hundreds. Temples, the food streets, and the best per-point value on the ground.
Day 9
Return
Business class home
The 50,000-mile seat on the way back is the reason the AA card got opened in the first place.
