How it came together

This trip started with a decision rather than a search: open an American Airlines card specifically to fund business class to Japan. That's the part people skip. A sign-up bonus earned against a named redemption is a plan; a sign-up bonus earned because the offer looked good is a balance you'll eventually waste on economy.

The seat cost 50,000 AA miles and $150–200 in taxes against a roughly $3,000 paid fare. Nine days later, that same cabin is what made a red-eye home feel like a rest day instead of a recovery week.

On the ground, the whole hotel run went through a single partner: Chase Ultimate Rewards to Hyatt. Ginza at 12,000 points a night for the city days, Hakone at 12,000 a night for the onsen stretch, and the Park Hyatt Kyoto at 5,000 points on an off-peak night, a rate that looks like a typo next to the cash price. Over $1,000 of hotel across three very different Japans, all from one currency.

Kyoto for the temples and the food, Hakone for the mountains and the water, Tokyo for the noise. Simplicity is a strategy: one airline award, one hotel partner, no orphaned balances left behind.

Earn toward a named redemption, not toward a balance. The plan should exist before the application.
Hyatt's off-peak award nights are the single best fixed-value target in points, especially in Japan.
Take the premium cabin on the leg you'll feel. For most people that's the flight home, not the flight out.
